Every aspect of your home is an investment, even your exterior surroundings. Walkways, driveways, and backyard patios all provide pathways that should be tied together to accent and enhance the overall personal and architectural style of your home. A great way to make your home stand out and stay trendy is by using pavers.
A paver patio is among the most durable choices for a home’s exterior space. Pavers are also used in driveways and pathways. Pavers are unique, beautiful and add value to your home. If properly maintained, your paver stones will last for generations. Regular cleaning and sealing is the key to extending the life and enhancing the beauty of pavers. Pavers are highly susceptible to nature’s elements, and without proper maintenance pavers can become stained and worn.
Regular cleaning of paver patios is recommended. This can be done in various ways, depending upon how often the paver surface is used. You can use a wet mop for regular cleaning. Using lukewarm water is recommended since this helps to remove fresh stains. If you need a stronger cleaning solution, mix together plain water and some dishwasher soap. Pavers are highly durable and can be scrubbed. If you have stone pavers you can buy a scrubber made specifically for natural stone surfaces.
Weeds often grow through the seams of paver surfaces. Weeds not only spoil the appearance of pavers, but they will also weaken the paver seams. Weeds retain moisture and over a period, induce surface cracking even among sturdy surfaces like stone pavers. Obviously, you can use an herbicide to get rid of the greenery, but a pressure washer will be a lot faster. A great way to prevent this problem is using polymeric sand. You’ll need to remove any existing weeds before using polymeric sand.
The absolute best way to keep your pavers maintained is to seal them. Sealing a paver will prevent erosion, weed growth, bug infestation, fading, and weather staining. When pavers are sealed, the sealer fills up the pores of the pavers making any dirt that hits the surface stay on the surface and not penetrate the paver. A sealed paver will make future cleaning much easier.
In most cases, pavers should be sealed using a water based joint stabilizing sealer. The water based sealers won’t build up on the surface like solvent based sealers do. Water based sealers won’t show traffic patterns like most solvent based sealers.
