How to Clean Double-Pane Windows

Cleaning double pane windows.

Many homeowners believe a foggy window is a dirty window. Unfortunately, the real answer is far worse. Double-pane windows utilize two pieces of glass that have an airtight seal between them. This seal is designed to lock the air in so it can act as an insulator. This is why they are so popular. When this seal is damaged trouble seeps in.

If water or dirt starts to build up between the two panes, it is an indication that this seal has been broken. This break can be as small as a pinhole. This is a clear sign that your window needs to be replaced or resealed. Resealing isn’t something a homeowner can do. So in both these cases, you’ll need to hire a professional.

If the inside of your double-pane window is showing signs of age, it’s likely time to replace the window. If window replacement isn’t currently in your budget, there are two options– drilling holes and not drilling holes. I know this sounds scary but it’s really easy. Drill a set of small holes at the top of the window and one small hole in the bottom window corner. After drilling, pour isopropyl alcohol into the holes. You could also insert a desiccate package or pellets in the space. This will help remove any fog or condensation.

*Be warned, this is a high-risk fix. If done improperly you could destroy your windows and you’ll have no choice but to replace them.*

To get rid of only moisture you can utilize a few different methods. A dehumidifier near the window can work wonders and can prevent mold growth. Another option is laying a moisture absorber along the bottom edges of the window. Most homeowners opt for a water snake. Water snakes aren’t poisonous! They are made of all-natural material that can be placed near or in a window to draw out moisture.
