9 Homemade Cleaner Hacks

We are bombarded constantly with new cleaning products that are supposed to change our lives. According to Statisticbrain.com, we spend $42 a month on household cleaning products. That may not seem like much, but that adds up quickly. If you want to save a few bucks, here are some quick homemade cleaner hacks:

Homemade Glass Cleaner

We know a thing or two about cleaning windows and glass around your home. Here is our version of homemade glass cleaner:

  • Mix 1 part vinegar with2 parts water
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon dish soap for every cup of water
  • Shake to mix

Antibacterial Hand Soap

Finding a quality hand cleaner that won’t dry out your hands and won’t drain your bank account is hard. The chances are you might not have these items in your home so this might be a stretch.

All-Natural Homemade Floor Cleaner

Just like our window cleaner, our homemade floor cleaner is a base of household items:

  • 1 part water
  • 1 part white vinegar
  • 1 part 70% Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
  • A few drops of liquid dish detergent
  • ¼ part lemon juice

DIY Upholstery & Carpet Cleaner

Homemade cleanser

If you are like me and have animals, this cleaner can be a life saver. Whether it’s pet stains or accidents by children this cleaner will not only clean but will also remove stinky smells.

  • ¼ cup of baking soda
  • ¼ cup of white vinegar
  • ¾ cup of warm water
  • ½ tablespoon of dish liquid soap

Homemade Deodorizing Spray

What I love about this homemade spray is that you can use unscented fabric softener. For anyone who is allergic to fragrances or has asthma, this is a must.

  • 2 cups fabric softener
  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 4 cups of warm water

Homemade Laundry Soap

This can be tricky and a little time-consuming. If you want a short cut you can find grated soap online. The key here is also not using baking soda. Washing soda is a little different so don’t make that mistake.

  • bar of grated bar soap
  • 1 cup of washing soda
  • 1 cup of borax
  • 10-20 drops of lemon or lime extract

Homemade Garbage Disposal Cleaner

I hate walking into a clean kitchen and smelling rotting food. This recipe is fun to make and extremely effective.

  • 3/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap
  • 1 lemon

After the first three ingredients are mixed grate the lemon peel into the mixture. Then cut the lemon in half and remove the seeds. Squeeze both halves into the mixture until the lemon is fully incorporated. Grab a sheet pan, spoon, and some parchment paper. Cover the sheet pan with parchment paper, use the spoon to mold the half rounds, and then tap them out onto the pan. Allow the tablets to dry overnight. Place the dried mixture in a sealable container.

Clean Your Washer

If you clothes are smelling as fresh as they should, it might be your washing machine. Front loaders are especially susceptible to mold and unpleasant smells.

  • 2 cups vinegar
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup water

Pour the mixture directly into the machine’s drum. Run a normal cycle at least twice. Make another batch and us a brush or sponge to scrub the edges.

DIY Dishwasher Detergent

I was extremely dubious about this one, but it seems to actually work very well.

  • 2 cups Borax
  • 2 cups washing soda
  • 4 packets of sugar-free lemonade Kool-aid

Place 1 Tbs in the pre-wash and 1 Tbs in the main wash.
